We continue to think about the family and friends of J.W. Bode, who died tragically in the hospital shooting. The funeral services celebrating and honoring his life will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday August 25, 2025, in Emmanuel Enid with Pastor Shonn Keels Officiating, full honors will be presented by the Enid Police Department Honor Guard.

Go Stargazing Tonight

Tonight there will be a Black Moon offering clear skies and the final chance to catch the Perseid meteor shower this year.

The Perseids meteor shower, which peaked around mid-August, will still be active until August 24. Tonight, the rates will have dropped significantly from their peak, but under the moonless sky, even faint meteors will be visible.

At 1:06 a.m. on August 23, the Moon enters its new moon phase. Because this is the third new moon in a single season, astronomers call it a “seasonal Black Moon,” an event that occurs roughly once every 33 months.

The highlight tonight will be the Milky Way. With the sky at its darkest thanks to the Black Moon, the luminous band of our galaxy will appear at its most striking. From late June through August, Earth’s night-side faces directly toward the galactic core in the constellation Sagittarius. This is the densest, brightest part of our galaxy, packed with star clusters, glowing nebulae, and dark dust lanes. Around midnight, the Milky Way arches high across the sky, making July and August the best time of year to truly experience its full grandeur.

Monument To Be Moved

The Chisholm Trail Monument will be moved on September 9th. The monument currently sits on Highway 81 near Carrier Road. It will soon be moved behind the Cherokee Strip Heritage Center facing E. Garriott.

The Chisholm Trail actually ran through Enid to Government Springs and then around parts of the downtown area.
